305 interchangeability question
I have a 1992 Camaro RS with a 305 and I have a 1980-1985 305 I want to rebuild and put in the Camaro. What I want know are the 92 heads going to be interchangeable with the older ones. Also would it just be better to carburate the engine and get rid of the TBI and ERG stuff. I need some advice but I am doing this on almost no budget.

This is not a good idea. The heads from the 80-85 (if that is what it is) are not interchangable with the 92, in other words you aren't going to slap the 92 heads on the older motor. Why not just rebuild the 92? The 80-85 305 in stock form puts out about 150 HP. Even if its for free, I wouldn't waste my time on it. Is there anything wrong with your 92?

I can't have my car down for the time it would take to rebuild the 92 block from scratch so I want to get the older block rebuilt then swap it out. The 92 is smoking and the TBI is giving my problems with high idle that eventual slows down, surges in power while driving, Check engine Light in with no code other that distributor code. So i don't know if I want to just make the car carburated.

It sounds like a tremendous amount of work. That older 305 will be ok...but thats just it, it'll never be what you want it to be. If thats what you have to do then I get it, but you still aren't going to get off cheap either. Was the older 305 carb'd? If not you might have some trouble finding a manifold that will allow you to put the carb on and still use you original hood. Be careful if you are in a emission testing area.
