clunking rear end - 84 camaro

i have a clunking in my axle. looks like a bushing/bearing is going out.

the gear in the red circle has a lot of play up and down when i hit the wheel or i can wiggle it up and down by hand.

the area in the green circle is where i can see the axle and i can see it move up and down.

any suggestions on fixing this issue.

Where's the "posi rear end" as mentioned in your sig? That's an open diff you have there.
And unless the picture is playing tricks on my eyes, it looks like your bottom spider gear is missing a tooth....or more? That'll certainly cause a clunk.

i was told it was a posi but never knew for sure. which gear is the spider gear.

Inside your ring carrier. The two side gears are splined to the axles. The smaller top and bottom ones are the spider gears that turn with the axles. I'm looking at the bottom one, with the tooth facing out. It doesn't look like there's a tooth there.

Better pull the gear out, put it under your pillow, and hope the toof fairy shows up tonight! ;)
