wierd engine noise
hey i dunno if you guys remember me or not but im the guy with the 83 4 cylinder camaro and i have another question. the engine when running makes this spitting noise kind of like a sprinkler going off and when a buddy of mine came over to look at it, he thought at first it was an exaust leak. well after looking at it and replacing a few parts we found out that wasnt the problem. we then tried to see where it was coming from and it feels from the air that is coming out that the leak or whatever is wrong is coming from an area near the manifold but we know for sure that that isnt it. any ideas on this would be greatly apreciated.

RE: wierd engine noise
A rotted out muffler or exhaust pipemay make the spitting sound (I cant hear what you hear over the web) And a cracked manifold would make aticking kind of sound. Maybe your exhaust donut or the flange not sealing. Where ever you feel the air from you cant say that is not the problem because you are not suposed to feel air coming out of there.

im experienceing the same problem as you. It happened to me when i took my exhaust manifold and put headers in its place. My problem, however, is at the collector. i have a leak there and it makes a tick sound that increases in sound and ticks as the rpms increase. funny thing is, it only happens under acceleration. at least to the point that i can hear it anyway

yeah you can definately hear mine - its sounds literally like a lawn mower when its on and the one night i turned it on it woke up all the neighbors. ive tried just about everything i thought of to fix and and still there is a noise. im wondering if its something with the actual engine itself that is causing the problem cuz ive replaced the valve cover on the exaust manifold and that didnt make a difference and the ring that goes between the exaust and the manifold was also replaced and didnt make a difference

The valve cover on the exhaust manifold? Are you refereing to the tin part that has a tube on it and a flex hose goes on it to the air cleaner? The cast iron manifold could be cracked itself. Look for black soot around it, on the head, just all over the manifold and what its near.
It could have blown exhaust manifold gasket or warped manifold
