I was reading a truck magazine that covered trans swaps and up-grades. It stated that the 700r trans had some major upgrades from the factory as the previous years that make it pretty stout behind a mildly built SB. I'm wondering what years are the best to look for as the mag. did not list specific years?

The 700R4 had some changes for the 1987 model year and after that they are the same until the 460E came along.

 

The 700R4 is also known as the 4L60. It was used from 82-93. After that is the 4L60E (electronic). So dont get confused if you find a 4L60.

 

changes were also made in mid 1984 went from 27 spline to thirty spline and a few other slight mods.
