Default What year engine will bolt to tranny

I have an "unknown" engine under the hood (supposedly a 350) that is leaking oil, so i'm thinking of just ditching the thing for something I know where it came from. Transmission is a 5 speed which I assume is stock from the 84 camaro Z28. I'm looking at an older350 (with the fan attached to the crank, not with an electric fan). My biggest worry is that the tranny won't bolt up. I'm supposed to call the guy today, so i can get more info on the block being put in. So will pretty much any carbed 350 (from cars and trucks) fit on the 5 speed?

The guy is asking 1,000 for what looks like a decent engine, relatively clean (it's painted orange if that helps) and would be able to do the swap for me. Any help is appreciated.

if itsa v8 5spd, it;s probably a 305, chevy never put the 350 with the t5 transmission, the transmission is took weak for that much power, having said that, do you really want to risk your transmission because of an oil leak? but back to your question, as long as it is a v8 in the car, pretty much any small block v8 will bolt up to it

Spoke to the guy today, the engine is sold. I explained to him what was up and i'm going to take it into him next week and see if he's going to build me an engine or if we can just rebuild mine. I might spend a bit and go for a lightly modded 305 (better cam, heads, and headers). Keep in mind my current engine has the fan "jimmy rigged" to be on all the time, missing the smog AIR pump, and no oxygen sensor.

I'd like to go a step back to an older carbed 305 or 350, less of a hassle to deal with. I'm not looking at insane numbers maybe 250, 300hp max. I think some people have 350's with the 5 speed and haven't had any problems, this is a weekend driver not really a DD, it might see 5,000 miles a year if it's lucky.

200-300 hp shouldnt be a problem with the t5, just dont bag on it. yeah some guys run built 350's with the t5 without problems, but its really hit and miss. one good launch and you could destroy that transmission, i just dont see the point to putting money into a car and creating a major weak link in the car. sorry i was ranting a bit, you should be fine with 200-300 horsepower
