What size is a 10-bolt differential?

There are 2 types of GM 10 bolt diffs, one round and the other squared off like the one in your car. The 7.5" is the diameter of the ring gear. Two size ring gears were used, depending on application, 7.5 and 7.625. Also used by GM were Dana/Spicer rear ends which also had 10 bolt covers, but various size housings and gears.

Thanks for the info...if there are two 7.5" differentials, how do I know I'm buying the right cover? I was thinking of picking up a chrome one, nothing too crazy but now I'm worried that I'll get the wrong one.

Careful with chrome stuff, especially if its a cheap knock off product. I know everyone loves shiny chrome, but they have a high tendency to leak. I would not want a single drip coming from my diff. I have a chrome pan on my trans (I wanted cast aluminum, but somehow hughes sent me chrome. 3 gasket changes later it still leaks. I mic'd it and it is just a little out of spec, and that is higher end product. I know the torque specs are different on a trans pan vs. a diff cover. Chrome don't get you home....

Huh. 15-20 years ago when I worked as a mechanic for my dad, we never relied on the gaskets only to prevent leaks. Every time we changed the differential fluid or had the cover off, we used silicone plus the gasket and never had an issue. I assumed I'd do the same with this one.
