Default valve covers

the passenger side vavle cover on my 86 z28 leaks out some oil onto the manifold, which causes some smoke. come spring time, i plan on replacing the valve covers and gaskets. im trying to find a nice set of aluminum valve covers, preferibly shiny, but the raw look is ok too as it will match my car. but with some speculations between model years, im having some difficulties. i do beleive it is the last of the 86's made, and has the older stlye mouting with the bolt with the flange on it. any help is apreciated.

Well you would know best what you have by looking. Are thhere four bolts around the outside or four going right through the top in a straight line. There are adapters to fit the old style onto center bolt heads.

Go to JEGS or look in their catalog. Chrome and Dress up, you'll find some nice sets.

Yeah, Jegs has some nice dress up sets for reasonable prices... from Mr. Gasket I think. Do you have centerbolt valve covers or the older style?

its the older style, where the bolts are on the side with the peice of metal that goes between the bolt and the valve cover itself

moroso has nice ones and reasonable. Why wait till spring to change a gasket? fix the gasket now then get the new valve covers if you cant afford them right now.. I changed my gasket on my 86 z in like half an hour.

im waiting to change it because i dont have a garage to work in. it wint be as warm as it is today until at least april, and im stuck at work (which is where i am right now). i might be able to use a friend's garage, but i dont think its heated. jegs offers a set of valve covers for like $23, and mr gasket offers a dress up kit that also includes the gasket, pcv valve, a breather, timing chain cover and gasket, and something else for like $55

The wait isn't worth it. If you can tough it out for half an hour, do it. You don't even have to be outside to put the gasket in the cover, so you could undo the bolts, take it inside, warm up while cleaning the cover and putting the gasket in, and then take it out and bolt it back on in like 5 minutes. You shouldn't have to be outside for more than 15 or 20 minutes tops.

i would have to either remove or move a lot of wires, move the a.i.r. system because thats in the way, and i think i would have to take off the alternator and a/c compressor. Also, since the mr. gasket kit im lookin at has a breather instead of the hose going into the throttle body, what do i do with the hole it will leave in my throttle body? and how does air and fuel get into the valve covers anyway? i know there is fuel and a little bit of oil comming out because there is some built up in the top of the throttle body, where the breather goes into it.
