Default V6 to V8 Transmission Swap

I am new to this site and so far the vast majority of the questions are concerning the transmission with an engine swap from a V6 to a V8. Alot of people are saying that the V6 700R4 will not bolt up. IT WILL BOLT UP. I have a 89 RS that I am currently restoring. From which it came with a V6. I have swapped out the engine to a V8. Still using the original 700R4 transmission that was bolted to the V6 which bolted up to the V8 just fine. So if there are any doubts about it dont sweat it. The only thing I can see here is that for the ones that are wanting to then first check to see if you actually have the 700R4. Because camaros also came with a smaller 200R4 transmission that yes was used with the V6. This might be where people are getting confused on.

thanks

in most cases, you would see the 200-4R and that is the issue, so unless your 110% positive you have a 700R-4, dont even try it.

Thats true. That was the thing I was trying to get people to see. Make sure you actually have a 700R4 and not the smaller 200R4. Other than the obvious things like wiring harness and things like that the only thing I had to change was the engine mounts. They were different from that of the V6.

I have been fixing a 79 camaro that had a V6 in it. I took that three speed manual and bolted it to a 350 and it works just fine.

a 79 is a second gen, we were referring to 3rd gens only.

I know but im just saying for the most part you bolt six and eight tranny from chevy together being that all the blocks have the same bolt pattern...that tranny on my car is from a 95 chevy truck...it bolted to and 81 block. Shouldnt have to many problems in same gen.

I think where most people are getting confused here is this...the only time you would probably have to change transmissions is in the case where your car has a L4 engine in it. Those engines were commonly coupled to the 200R4 transmissions. As long as you have a V6 then you will not repeat not have any problems coupling it to the 700R4 transmission. There is no such thing as a V6 700R4 and a V8 700R4. These transmissions are all the same. It doesnt matter what generation camaro you have. Thats the one good thing about Chevrolet and that being all there engines were designed and built on common dimensions no matter if you have a small block or a big block. So you could take a 1970 TH350 and bolt it to a 1990 305 for example. The possibilities are endless.

no one said that you couldnt, the point was making sure what tranny you have before you swap the motor. also, i had 2 camaros that were the same year and engine, one had a 2004-R one had a 700R-4, so make sure you have the right trans

Ummm Yes there is a such thing as a 200R-4 v-6 it was used in turboed buicks. Remember the GNX and Grand National. Yes there are chevy 200 R-4's as well remember the ummm Camaro, Monte Carlo, Gutless and many others?
As far as problems with v-6 v-8 apps yes the trans will bolt but the v-6 version is not I REPEAT IS NOT AS STRONG AS THE V-8's.
If you use a 700-r4 from a v-6 on an 8 then upgrade the valve body, torque converter and a few other odds and ends. Dont just take my word on it call Art Carr he has done a few for me.

he was just saying that the 700r4 is awlays the same, no matter what motor it is hooked up to. And yes, we know about the 200r and the GN. Bu a good question...how do you tell which transmission you have?
