Transmission Help
So i am in the process of buying a car and i test drove this 1991 Z28 with the 350, 3.23posi, auto, etc. and was going through the paces and it shifted from stop to first to second perfectly, but when it was time to shift into 3rd, its like it just shifted into neutral. I do not know the condition of the fluid but i was wondering if i am looking at a nightmare of buying a new trannyor a simple filter/fluid change. Is this a common problem? Please help.
Thanks
Thanks
Yes ill prolly do this anyway. if it is not the fluid. is there another possibility. clogged filter perhaps. Also does the OBD set codes for tranny stuff or only in the engine?
I was looking through other forums and some other people were having the same problem. they said that one of the valves was sticking or something? I have absolutely no knowledge of how transmissions work, no matter how long i look at the cut aways and exploded views... nothing. please help me out.
I always had rebuilders do it so cheap for me I never messed with the inners. You could get many answers but I think the bottom line is your going to have to expect to pay a tranny shop to open it up to fix it.
Sounds like the servo is worn out. This was common on the 700R4's. The 2nd to 3rd shift was really weak and would flare. This was the case when I bought my 91 Z. Yours just soundsexceptionally bad if it's like going into neutral. TCI sells a heavy duty servo for this problem. It has "surface area up to 63% greater than stock providing an
additional 300 lbs of 2nd gear band apply force. The TH-700R4 servo kiteliminates the common 2nd to 3rd flare problem. This kit can be easily installed without removing the transmission or draining the fluid." You could just put one of these on and it should fix it. Here's the link. It's about 1/2 to 3/4 the way down the page.
