im gona have to tape mine when i run it threw the gears, the trany is built and it sounds like a soft shift like you say but does feel like another gear. the stock trany did not feel the same at all. as for a 700r4? if its been modified will handle plenty of power, stock 350hp, mine is supposed to handle to 600 hp. get the numbers off the tag and call the jasper shop and see if they can tell you anything about the trans.

Part of the "it has fifth gear" deal would have to do with not being familiar with the trans. You'll be cruising along in O/D, and suddenly you notice your tach drops a few rpm's as the t.c. locks up. You say "oh, it must have an extra gear in there"! It's quite possible the previous owner of this guys car didn't know his butt from a hole in the ground, and just passed along what "he thought" it was.

uneducated people dont mean to lie, they just dont know what theyre talking about.

camaro, not sure which 700r4 equipped vehicles you have driven, but mine have always dropped hard into convertor lockup. my car, my 95 blazer (4l60e), my fiance's 90 blazer. the only ones that dont, that i have encountered in my years, are 96 4l60e's with the pulse width modulation tcc lock up. my 95 blazer would lock at 45 mph and would go from 2400 to 1800

2400 down to 1800 when locked? Man, you had some serious, bad slippage going on inside that torque converter. Good thing it did lock up, or it would have burned up. A healthy t.c. won't drop anywhere near that much, at least none of the healthy ones I've had did.
Mine were a 94 3.4 Camaro, 96 Z28, 91 Camaro 305RS, and my present 92 Vette. They all lowered the rpm's at lockup a minimal amount (200 rpm range). A 600 rpm drop means t.c. problems.

No, no, no - I didn't pay a penny extra for what trans was in it. As was said, I'm trying to put a good rebuild plan into place and just trying to figure out what exactly is (or could be) in it. Want to make sure that IF I needed a new trans, I budgeted for it, etc. The previous owner told me it was a 5-speed and I didn't think about it until I got home. And as I said, I drove the car a very short distance before parking and starting tear down.

I will find a good used stock shifter and install. Thanks for all of the advice.

it did that with the old and new trans. new trans included new t.c. however i think the one included was a high stall. the flash stall on the oem converter was 2k, on the new one it was around 2400. it made the difference of it being able to power brake, but also hurt the fuel economy and towing a bit

Finally heard back from Jasper. They confirmed what all you already told me, it is a stock 4L60 transmission that was sold back in April of '00. Previous owner was full of...well, it's obviously not a 5-speed (again, as all of you already told me).

Since I have no idea how many miles are on this, any need to get it looked at/rebuilt when putting in my new engine? Or should I just ride with it and worry about it later if/when I run into problems?

Okay, another stupid question...do all of the 4L60 transmissions have overdrive? If not, is there a way to tell if mine does or not?

You have a 700R4 the 4 means 4 speed. If you was the 3 speed it would be a TH350. 4L60 Is just the new name GM started using in 93, I think, for the 700R4
