Default tbi tank pickup for carb

i am putting a carbed 350 in my 89 rs, the in tank fuel pump is junk, can i just run a mechanical pump on the block and pull fuel thru the pickup or do i have to swap one from a carburated version, the guy i got the car from said he had a inline autozone electric pump on it.

Yes, but you need to drop the tank and make sure the factory electric pump is gone, and place a piece of fuel hose in it's place.

yep, you will burn a pump up trying to pull fuel through another non functional pump.

the previous owner cut a hole in the sheet metal right above the pickup , so i just need to pull the in tank pump and just put a fuel line down in there. what should i do with the other lines, cap them? and which wire is for the fuel guage, im guessing the one he didnt try to hard wire to a 12 volt source

Oh man, what a mess. I recommend dropping the tank and installing a new sending unit. I suppose you could get away with taking some high quality fuel hose and reconnecting the lines (such as Aeroquip Stainless Braid Racing Hose.)

Wow, nothing like a quality hack job! One of those fuel lines is a high pressure supply line that should have been flared and connected with hard line again, NOT with a rubber hose that could let loose, leak down, and drip on the exhaust. And were those other two vent lines left open like we see it...spewing out gas fumes....right above the exhaust system too? That whole setup was a good recipe for a carbeque! By the looks of his work, the previous owner had no business laying a hand on that car.

By the sound of it, the PO removed the intake pump, placed a piece of hose in it's place, and installed an inline electric fuel pump, so there was no high pressure at the sending unit assembly.

Question: Does the fuel gauge work right now? Hard to tell in the picture, but it looks like the ground is maybe soldered to the gas tank? The fuel gauge wire... man I just did this a month ago but I'm having a mental block on if it's the gray or purple...

The far right line (referencing the picture) is the pickup line, second from the right is the return line, third is the emissions line that goes to the evap system, and the last one connects to a one way check valve that allows the tank to vent. Reconnect all of them, but cap the emissions line off in the engine bay assuming you're evap system is gone. Keep the return line for if you decide to go with an electric pump.

nothing more american than a classic hack job, but the benifit i am going to fabricate a cover for the sending unit with a thick silicone gasket so i dont have to ever drop the tank! im going to run a standard mechanical pump, so it wont need steel braided line, i am thinking high pressure fuel injection line from checker, can i just cap all the other lines including the vent and use a vented gas cap, i want to remove all the emission canisters and junk, i dont know if the fuel guage works cause i havent put a battery in it yet, And so i dont have to start another thread, the 700r4 while in park the car will roll, and it wont shift all the way back to 1st, could this be a cable adjustment?
