Strong gasoline smell

So I guess It's always been a problem with my car, but it seems to be more noticeable lately. More often than not, I can smell a strong fuel odor coming from my Camaro. I can be standing in the driveway 30 feet from the car and it just kind of lingers. Some times are worse than others. There's no leaks anywhere in the fuel system, and there is a strong fuel smell coming from the carburetor but I'm not sure if that's the only source.
When the cars closed up, you can sometimes smell it on the inside aswell.
No emissions either.

The line from the tank is hooked up, but the canister is long gone. There's a little rubber vacuum cap over the evap hard line. Is it just normal for a car like this and it's something I have to live with?

When you converted the car over to carb, did you keep a functioning vent line from the tank? The factory fuel system is sealed and uses the charcoal canister to absorb the gas fumes. You might be building up pressure inside the gas tank. Next time, when you park the car, burp your gas cap open enough to break the seal, but still leave it on. Then see if your car still "fumes" from 30 feet away.

I didn't do the conversion to carb. It has a one way check valve on the end of one of the vent lines, then the other vent line goes to where the evap canister used to be and is capped off.
I do notice that from time to time I hear the gas tank "popping" like if you were to suck the air out of a pop bottle. I don't know if the vent cant keep up or what, but after I hear it and by the time I open the gas cap, there's no pressure (positive or negative) in the tank. Sometimes there is a little negative pressure but nothing extreme.
Also, I don't know if this is related or not, but I'll notice that my fuel filter (mechanical pump with a Purolator F20011 fuel filter) will look bone dry, but I'm holding 6 PSI at idle and there are no performance issues whatsoever. There was a TON of crap inside my gas tank from sitting and I was going through a fuel filter a week. I've since then pulled out the tank and had it cleaned and replaced all the lines, but have not touched the pump. It's a Jegs chrome mechanical pump. Is there a screen on the inlet side that could possibly be plugged? Could I have damaged the pump?

I don't know about the Jeg's model pump, but I've never seen a mechanical fuel pump with an inlet screen. Do you have a fuel filter before the pump? I hope so, for the protection of the pump. An after-pump filter is optional.
