what is the size/dimensions of the stock exauasht system in a 92?

i wanted to just to headers, cat, and muffler and use everything else stock to save $$$? is this even a good idea

 

I think 2" is stock, or not far from it.

I was told anything bigger than 3" won't clear... Depending on location, you can do a very limited choice. I suggest just buying the extra piping since its just a few extra bucks.

Try 2 1/2 exhaust, long tube headers, and whatever Muffler. I'd skip the Cat, who's going to know? Mine lacks it, and cops never cared (or knew for that matter). But a Thirdgen has relatively no space under it.

I'll assume you want dual exhaust, you'll need to find a customexhaustshop and let them know where you want your muffler and cat (if you want it).

As for mine, I have two pipes leading from shorty headers to a single muffler, breaking into two pipes again, going over the rear-end, and out the back. Now my muffler is about 2 - 4 inches from the ground, not good, but no cat and more space in the back.

You won't fit two mufflers under it, or else it'll look horrible, trust me, some people around my town have tried it, they look Fugly.

However, you can put a big muffler under the gas tank where the stock one sits and that'll give you more room, but the muffler will cost more and it will be a Y-pipe exhaust (not True Dual), meaning two pipes come from the headers, connect into one, go to the muffler, and break into two upon leaving the muffler.

asmith has that on his 97'. Same concept as the Thirdgen. And yours should be like that too. Either way, you might as well rid of the old piping, it will more or less rust off eventually, and this way, all of your pipes come clean!

You are going to save money by just replacing certain parts on your exhaust system, Also you do not state what engine is in the car??? That info would help.

so its 3 inch with 2.5inch tips?

 

Not on 305 TBI cars, but upgrade to 3" Catback exhaust system will be improvement over the smaller stock system.

 

Sorry to say this, but I have a stock exhaust that came off of a 91 L03sitting in my garage that is definitely a three inch midpipe with 2.5 outs. It also happens to be what pretty much any exhaust parts retailer will tell you to get if you put in to their system that the car is a 92 camaro 305 V8.

 

idk i think my cat or muffler blew out recently because when i bought it, it had a NICE rumble and stuff but now when i rev to 4 grand i get a HUGE crackel thatsounds pretty kick ***. i wasjust looking ot probably just get new headers from hooker like the cheap pair thats under 200 bucks.

 

When you do a full exhaust job, doing a bigger cam is not a bad idea either. itll give you so much more power when combined together as oppose to one or the other.

 

according to haynes, the 82-85 cars used 2 1/4" crinkle bend exhaust. my 86 tpi is around 3 inch, but the pipe between the headers and muffler isnt oem (although everything else is?) you could save money using hedman shorty headers ($136 from jegs), a flowmaster 80 series cross flows (around $80), and just punching out your stock cat. dont forget things like gaskets and hardware too
