so im driving home at 1 am and i come up to a intersection. the turn i need to make is a 50 mph straight away. i floor it and go for it. when i hit 4000 revs, it bogged and the tach jumped to 6000 and back to 4000 and all over the place. then it started backfireing, and makeing odd noises and acting like it had the worlds crappiest rev limiter. it only does this at high rpms.i dont have to floor it either, but it helps. my dad drove it and did the same thing. he floored it and kept it there. for about 6 seconds. the engine wouldnt rev higher than what i thought was 5000 or around there. i had it up to 6000 by accident once. anyways he said it might be my distributor cap. mainly because it was makeing the tach jump and it was acting weird. has anyone ever had this problem?
o bty, its a 85 305 carbed 5 speed.

 

I had an ignition module do that to me. Poor intermitent runningand even when it was running good the tach would do a little dance.

 

everything works mint on it though. until it hit high rpms it does that. it idles fine, runs fine, rides fine, and accerates fine. but on the top end it sucks.

 

Did you never hear of the REDLINE (4800 rpms) on the Tach?? A 305 dose not like high revs and yourengine is telling you that. Let us know when you blow that 305 up.

 

small block can rev up to 5500 with no problem. when you get up to 6000 is when valve float will start and that will sound like a bad rev limiter. If you get to 4k and then the tach jumps I would think ignition. Maybe your coil is getting weak and can not keep saturated with the high rpm

 

Yea. that LG4 which is rated at 155 HP @ 4200 rpms will run all day at 5400/6000. Maybe he will sendyou pictures when it blows up. [sm=chairshot.gif]

 

Its max HP was at 4200. That does not mean it can not rev higher. [sm=icon_beat.gif]
It will still go but the HP will drop. Get your **** straight!

you wanna shut up. i think your being an ***. really. i mean come on. jerk. and yess i rev it up to 5500 rpms all day long and it has over 170k on the motor. thats my choice. and you know what? i have a 350 waiting to be dropped in. so yea. ill blow it up any day i want. then ill put in a 300 hp beast. plus my sticker runs out in 3 weeks. so im gonna register my truck and drive that. cant afford 2 cars on the insurance. so now that ive explained that, shut the hell up.
