Something Wrong?
Hello, I'm just looking maybe for some info and thoughts, feedback. I have a 1991 z28 tpi auto, the motor went out and I put a jasper 305 in, tranny went out about 500 miles after that, just rebuilt that. I'm thinking the owner before me ran the crap out of it?? But anywho, the car doesnt run up to par as it used to. I know its only a little stock 305, but I was wondering why or whats going on with it? Ever since it ive had the car ive had problems with the car, but im kinda stuck with it now, until I get out of college. some examples are.. if i floor it at a red light i cant even squeal the tires, when in overdrive its really bogged down, it seems like i have to be in 1st gear, to get the thing sideways at all , the tranny doesnt kick down anything past like 45 mph, after that its just all bogged down. I got new cat converter put on and anoother shop said its the worst welding hes ever seen. Other than that the car is alright, ive timed myself and if I start out in 1st gear, its faster than just using overdrive... just something feels wrong.. im gonna do the plugs and wires here soon, but it feels like the power is there, just like its clogged or something is holding me back... any help would be great, the car looks amazing paint is great, so I really want to keep it for a long time and hope to swap a ls1, or another motor in someday. thanks for the help,
Corey

RE: Something Wrong?
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but when the gas is to the floor, the cable should be tight. There is throttle bracket bolted to the side of the plenum and the TV cable sort of snaps in to the bracket. This has an adjuster on it. There are tabs and you pull it tight. If this is out of whack, you can screw up your tranny. The first time I had to do it, I took it to a tranny shop to be sure it was correct and I watched to see it done right and they charged me like 5 bucks and now I know how to do it. I also have a 91Z, and as far as the performance, something sounds wrong. When I had the stock 350 in it still, I could roast the tires fine etc. First step I would suggest, is to yank the 305 out and put in a 350 or better.....Hope you get her runnin'!

I agree with Raven, rip that 305 out and put a 350 in it. I used to have an '89 IROCz28 with a 350 TPI and she moved. After a kid blew a stop sign and took her away from me, I recently picked up an '85 z28 5 speed with a 305. The thing doesn't move as much as I want her too. Save up your money and put in a 350 if you're serious about keeping it.

RE: Something Wrong?
ok... lil updated I raced a friend tonight he has a 1992 305 tbi auto firebird, flows, and k&n air filter... and I beat him by a car length or so... so maybe my car isnt running that bad, it just doesnt downshift past 45 mph, and the tires wont chirp if I floor it, still think its that Tv cable guys??
