Default Smog pump removal

Hey, has anyone on here removed their A.I.R. smog pump on their 3rd gen. I have a seriously modified/rebuilt 305 TBI and I've been hearing alot about people removing the smog pump.

1. Can you still pass emissions?
2. What kind of power gains did you experience?
3. Were there any special mods that had to be done other than a smaller drive belt?

Thanks

1. Depends on which state you live in. If they do a physical inspection, then no. If its only a OBD1 tailpipe test, then yes.

2. You will experience no power gains of anykind. It is a belt driven pump that pumps air and not fluid. It most likely takes .1hp to drive that pump..
3. You will need a delete pulley to maintain stock routing. Keep in mind the smog pump is part of your alternator bracket.

Really, tts not worth it you'll notice nothing and will start to degrade your ability to sell it.. Highly modified 305TBI is kind of an oxymoron, if you depend on removing emission equipment to give you a seat of the pants increase, you may not have been getting good advice.

Thanks. I've been seeing alot about this and wondered why people are doing it. If there's no gains, then I won't bother. Thanks for the advise.

I had removed the pump on my old 91, strictly for cosmetic reasons. You don't need a delete pulley at all, but the new belt will be longer than the old one, because you route it a slightly different way. And yes, everything will still spin the correct direction and work perfectly. I used a Gatorback belt #4060967 (967=96.7" long). Your stock belt is a #945=94.5" long. I also cut a section of steel pipe to take the place of where the pump sandwiches between the aluminum bracketry. I didn't want to take a chance of it cracking, as it's an integral support piece of what's still hanging on the engine.

The smog pump will work in your favor when passing smog test. It takes very little parasitic hp as stated. I'd leave it on.
