Default shifting dangerously high

when i get my car to downshift and then floor it, it shifts at about 4500-5000 rpm. 5000 is about where the redline on the tach is. (700r4) is this dangerous? my dad says this could end up blowing the motor. if it is dangerous what do i do? i couldn't live without nailing it once in a while.

my rebuilt trans shifted at 4800 every time. so i figure yours probably slips a little, so 5000 isnt bad. a friend of mine, his governor was bad in his trans and it didnt shift until the engine misfired at 7000

Same. I shift at 5000 sometimes ( pointless since they run out of power around 4000) but no harm done. I've gone as far as 5600 by accident doing donuts and no harm done. My motor also has 180,000 miles.

i shift at 7k-7500rpm, depending on how high i want to run my motor. i've never had problems with it, maybe it's because i'm running a 350 though

Unless you are running solid lvalve ifters your engine is not going to rev that high, due to lifter pump up and valve float. If you are using hydraulic lifters, which is the common set up,you should check out your tach as it may be a bit optimistic.

You know you can let off just a bit around 4600 rpms. You should learn your car. Just holding the gas pedal to the floor is rarely the best way to see what she has.

my dad says this could end up blowing the motor
He is correct, Many of these cars did not make it out of warranty with the original cranks. The 305's had bottom end issues.

5000 RPMs for 350 in good condition is not too bad. 5000 RPMs for 305 that has a ton of miles on it would not be good. Your shift point should be adjustable. I am not sure what year you have but I think its pre computer control shift points. Most likely a vacuum modulator/ Detent cable.

LOL 7500 RPMs Not with a Stock GM ignition. The Factory HEI will start to retard the timing at about 6400 RPMs. This is do to the time it takes to triger the modual. At 7000 RPMs I saw about a 6 deg lose in timing with the time falling back below 30 deg total. At 7500 I would expect to see - 15 deg. I will admit I have never seen this because the engine would not go that high with the HEI.Same enginewould do 7800 RPMswith a duel point. This of course is not an issue withthe newerDIS.

sounds fine to me but dont go over 5500 with a stock motor the valves will hit the top of the piston and could cause engine damage, but if it is only going to about 5500 thats right were you want it to shift on its own.
