Thats a lame dream....

^ RS, the dream was good, it was the waking up that was lame. I hope you weren't trying to make any sense out of that, there wasn't any. I'm sure you have an idea about what steps you can take to make the car a performer, it just isn't realistic to do with the 305. So dream, add "all the right parts" as suggested above, and have your dream car.

Black Z makes it sound like his Z is a totally different car from the RS when it comes right down to it he still just has a grocery getter too. Changing the motor and adding all the right parts will make it a better car.

Right on, but it is a nice fast grocery getter with all the right parts. Also I still get comments on now good it looks, and it is at the grocery store parking lot.

No stock 350 is going to be a good option to just drop in, it will make hardly any more power than your 305.
In my opinion the most interchangeable (and easy to find coincidentally) block is a 3970010 casting from the 1970's. They are also known to be pretty strong, and some of them have a high nickel content (can't remember how this is indicated however.)
The casting number was used for both 2 and 4 bolt main 350's, as well as the DZ302 and the 327. 4 bolt mains are ideal, however not required since you won't be making enormous amounts of power. Both the 350 and 327 share the same bore, so if you come across a good deal on a 327 don't be so quick to pass it up. An entry level forged rotating kit can be had for under $1000, paired with a set of vortec heads and your choice of cam would make for a very nice combo.
Look around on Craigslist. There's always engines popping up on there for sale.
