I don't know I did not hook it up. Is your so called vats resitor in a yellow conector? There is a two wire conector under the column for the air bag also

No

The VATS resistor was connected to the wires that used to be shielded by a thick orange jacket that leads up the steering column. The two wires are white. Do you know what color the VATS plug should be?

Also, when I took off the resistor completely, the security light didn't come on at all and the car didn't crank.

Well
As far as I can tell

There's only one box left. Its black and plastic. Inside is a blue circuit board. other than that I don't see anything else that could be VATS.
