Default Replacing AC condenser - 1989 Camaro RS 6Cyldr

Hey guys,
I've decided to put my car back on the road so that I can save some money by having no car payments . Last time it was up and running my mechanic said that I needed to replace my AC condenser. He said that he ran some colored gas through the lines to check for leaks and it was all coming up from behind my dash. Does that sound correct? Last time it was running was back in 2004/2005 so I do not recall his exact words. If this is the problem, is this something that is hard to fix? I was given a quote of $600 to fix it but I found the part online for $85. What do you guys recommend. I have no problem taking apart my car as long as I have some kind of instructions to follow. Not just take apart your dash and figure it out... Has anyone ever changed their condenser before or do you guys know of any instructions?
Thanks in advance,

Being that the AC condenser is located in front of the radiator. I don't see how it could be leaking behind the dash. Most likely he was talking about the evaporator core which is located behind the dash.
