Default rear end change

I have the stock rear end in my 89 RS, its posi and i would like to keep it. but i was looking to get a 3.73 rear end. can i just buy the gears and whatnot, put them in, and keep the posi? or is that part of the gears or what???

You can swap the gears but you have different carriers. So you need to find out if there are gears for your carrier. I think the easy way is to find out what your gears are now and then as you look for aplications you should see "3.08 and lower carrier. 3.23 and higher carrier" or something to that effect. The posi or limited slip is part of the carrier.

The gears just won't mesh right posi or not. Pull the rear cover and the ratio is usually stamped on the pinion gear, if not count the theet on ring & pinion & do the math. Then choose the proper gear set as MadMike said. The posi should fit fine either way.

You can keep your posi, but the ring and pinion have to fit the particular carrier. The main difference is in the thickness of the ring gear.
