Default rear end ?

i currently have a 89 camaro rs 5 spd with a 305 its got a cam, lifters, ignition, and exhaust.
i am currently in the process of buying a 83 trans am and i heard that they have posi rear ends with possibly differnet gearing then my camaro does anyone know for sure about that
and if so would it be worth it and also im not sure but im guessing it has the crossfire injection vs. my throttle body injection
anyone know for sure if it would be worth it to switch that out as well
i was looking at forums and posts and from wat ive read the 83 trans ams diddnt have more horsepower then my camaro stock so i diddnt know if that was because of the injection or wat but if anyone has any help for me let me know please!

Sounds like you should probably just leave the firebird alone, and just get yourself a posi carrier and new gears for the Camaro. You'll need a hydraulic press to install the bearings on the new pinion gear, so if you don't have that, I would recomend taking it to a shop. Summit Racing sells both the carrier and the gears, and you'll also need to get new speedometer gears, which can be found here: speedomet er gears

You now have a LO3 305 with some Mods (stock 170HP) with a 5sp & 10-bolt 3:08 open rear.

Now you are looking at 83 TA with a possible LU5 CFI TA with 175HP & 2:93 or optional 3:23 10-bolt which may not have a Limited Slip rear (RPO G80) that was a option. It could/or could not have one unless you check.

My opinion would be to forget about the TA, too many unknowns. I would suggest, a rear end change that you swap out the complete rear end. Try to find a 90/92 IROC/Z28 rear with a 3:42 rear with Disc Brakes & limited slip. Rpo codes would be for the 3:42 GU6 & G80 Limited Slip & J65 for rear Disc Brakes. This is a direct swap requiring NO modifications and is cheaper then a gear ratio change. Also with Dics Brakes its a upgrade at no additional costs. Good luck

No. You will need a new Proportioning Valve, but nothing that going to cost big bucks. Also wouldn't you like to have rear brakes like these.

Depends on the rear axle cost, but it would be about the same or less then the axle change you were thinking about.

I got a rear end that looks almost like that. Mine has the Hotchkis control arms and panhard rod. There not red though damn it![&o]
My 84 had rear disc but I replaced it with the Borge Warner. I did not care for the brake set up on the ealier cars and the BW is a posi. Then I wrecked that car so I put the rear in my 91 and before I replaced the proportioning valve I could have the car on a lift in drive and push the brakes and have the rear wheels keep turning.
The proportion valve was not that expensive through the GM parts distributer. I had a shop so I got my parts from the same place that the dealers get thier parts. You gotta make sure you get one with the lines in the same places though. The 84 valve would not work in the 91.

Those are the 11.655 rotors & PBR aluminum calipers on a 1989 BW 9-bolt rear. The Panhard bar & rear LCA are Sphon parts. Not seen are the Sphon SFC.s also red.
