Default Radiator Fan Question Please?

So i have been hearing different opinions... Simple question here i need to get answered please guys... I have a 91 Camaro RS... There is a fan right behind the radiator and some people are telling me the fan is always running when your car is on, others tell me it only turns on at a certain temp... well anyways i drove it today for the first time ran it about 45 minutes... but the fan didn't run at all from what i can tell... but the temp gauge goes from 100-260 and the temp never went above 150... so should i be worried that the fan doesn't run? Can i get anyone to confirm that the fan always runs when the car is on? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Default RE: Radiator Fan Question Please?

The fan is controlled by a temperature controlled switch. It should only come on when the temperature gets above a determined point. Mine comes on when the temperature is about 210 degrees. As long as you are driving the car fast enough to get sufficient air flow through the radiator, the fan isn't needed. Some people have wired their fans to always run when the car is on, but it wasn't designed to do that. Since your temp guage is not showing that the engine is overheating, you are probably fine. But 150 seems a little low. You should check your thermostat, because the normal operating temperature is 180 to 190 degrees. I hope that answers your questions.

Mine will stay cool while driving in this weather. Its only getting into the mid 70s' to low 80s. Dont worry about it staying cool now if your weather is about the same. Watch for it when the weather gets hotter.
Have a/c? Turn it on and see if the fan kicks on. If it does you know the fan motor works. Once you get the engine warmed you can also park and let it idle and watch for it to kick on.

Thanks for all the input/help guys! But yeah the weather has only been about up to 50 or maybe 60 here so its been rather cool... But i decided i am going to have my mechanic buddy put in a new heat/temp sensor thing in case mine is broke and also install a fan relay to make it work so i don't have to even worry about it... Sorry about the n00b question here... I'm real new to the mechanical field... There is a ton i want to learn and just started.... Last weekend i learned to change oil... /tear
Well Thanks again! Peace!
