RE: proper way for timming on 89 tpi??
I don't think it's different, but on my 91 Camaro, on the passenger side by the wheel well, there is a little green or brown ( I don't remember for sure) wire with a black connector. Unplug this first. This is to time the engine without the computer. Then with your timing light and turning the distributor, set the timing and get her running. Then reconnect that black connector on the passenger side and she should run on the computer just fine. It explains it in a Haynes or Chiltons manual I believe. It's been awhile since I've done it exactly.

Chiltons. Haynes is evil.
My 86 2.8L TPI had a brown wire inside a wire loom near the rear of the engine, just a single wire with a connector to another brown wire.

sorry but not to hijack the thread, I've got a question for Flufytiger. I couldn't find the connector where my haynes said it suppose to be. Can you tell me exactly where it is? I've got a car similar to yours. Better yet can you snap a picture for me? thanks
