Project Phoenix is about to get started :)
Its been a long time coming but latter this week i will get the ball moving by ordering some of the body components so they will be at the house when i get home. For some of the new guys that dont know this story i will give you a quick run down. This was my mothers car and probably the reason i fell in love with F-bodys. She picked the car up new off the dealer lot back in 89 and until about 2000 it was her daily driver. Shortly after i started driving the car and put more then my wear and tear on it. The car is a factory 2.8 black T-top 700R fire bird nothing real special. After i moved out my mother let my aunt drive the car for a few months and after a series of accidents the car was given back to my mother in kind of harsh condition. The car sat for some time until right before i deployed. It took a lot of effort but after a new fuel pump, some special wiring skills, and a hole lot of complaining i was shocked that the old girl fired up and i was able to still drive the car around with 230,000 miles on the old girl. Keep in mind this car has never had the valve covers off or the transmission out after having a rough life. The transmission finally started letting go right before i deployed. The car can still be driven but you can fill she has had better days. After taking a lot of time to think about it and some planing its time to start the "project"
This car was what started my F-body love. I have now owned 5 other F-bodys over the years (79 350 camaro, 88 formula 305TBI, 89 formula 305TBI, 99 3.8 firebird, 00 WS6) My love for what i fill is one of the true American muscle cars runs deep in my blood and i fill very close to this car that started it all. This project is going to be a long, difficult, and expensive one.
I am restoring this car to show my love for f-bodys, my mother and every thing she gave me, and to give to my kid one day so he can find the same simple enjoyment that 2 generations of his blood line have felt.
I will be documenting some of the smaller projects and posting them on the forum. As well as asking for my share of help
from time to time.
The first project is saving as much of the car as i can and starting to repair the body and insides one steep at a time. Once i get the body some what right and find out where i stand i want to get the 2.8 and drive line out of there and get her to a paint shop so she can finally be one color again. After we get the body and inside right then the fun stuff can start
.
I will be spending a lot of time focusing on the drive line build and it will bet the longest section of the project. When i started this i wanted to drop in just a simple transmission and maybe a crate 290/350 or some thing. How things change. Its still a long way off and i have a billion other hurdles to over come before i can even look at the drive line but i am thinking of a crate ZZ4 backed up with a mild 700R and a real rear end. Of course as many of you know there are a lot of changes that need to be made and this project is not for performance but to show the true spirit of the F-body which to me is more then just going fast or setting 1/4 mile times.
Well if you are still reading this i take that you have nothing at all too do or you are looking forward to updates and progress reports.
Thank you every one for reading i will be working on this project in my spare time and on rainy days in the garage so lets pray for some rain people
