he very well may have done that, when i bought the car i wasnt to "mechanically minded" and didnt bother to ask how it was all done. Now he lives somewhere elseand i dont have his number so i cant find out. All i know is it works just fine as it is. And the transmission is holding up ALRIGHT. could better. I think after paint, ill try and get me a t56, or maybe a turbo 350 with an overdrive. We will see. i kinda like the shifting thing when im out for a sunday cruise on some of these roads.

I'm an engineer in the automotive industry so I work with stuff all the time. The 5 speed could hold up to the 350 but just not with much safety factor. The life of the tranny was not enough to go into production with it. The 350TPI had way more torque than the 305. It had to be designed to assume people would go beat the hell out of it and yet you can't have tons of warranty issues. This is why the automatic was the only option with the 350 from the factory. The 5-speed would work, but don't plan on it making it 150,000 miles or whatever the life expectancy of the car was intended to be from GM.

thats about what i figured. i didnt think that it was so much performance issues, just life expectancy issues more than anything. GM likes to have long lasting stuff out there, and with that combo, it wasnt very long lasting.
