Default possible rod bearing going bad, need help

alright, there sounds to be a bit of a knock around 2k and up on the driver's side bank. im assuming its going to be a bad rod bearing. im guessing bearings will cost about $50-$60. what else should i plan on spending and getting if i am going to tear my engine down. im already thinking intake gasket, head gaskets, oil pan gasket. what about front and rear main seals, and what else should i get. any suggestions on pulling my engine out? its a 305 tpi. i thought of getting a 350 and putting it in there, but i will have to buy another car while im working on this.

if you want to keep the 305, just call around to your local parts store and get a 305 rebuild kit. comes with everything you would need. probably around 300-400 for the whole kit, includes bearing, all the gaskets rear main seal, front crank seal, valve seals etc.

If it is just a worn bearing, you can probably get away by just using an undersize bearing. But if you spun a bearing the crank journals got damaged and need to be reground. And if it was a rod bearing, the rod will have to be resized as the big end got stretched out. Failing to to these thing will result in you tearing the engine apart again, if not immediately, during the next few days.

While you have it down that far, I would replace the timing chain and gears, it is like $20.00 for the timing kit.

if i rebuild the 305, im thinking of getting the crank ground, rods spec'd (i can do that myself), and replace if nessacary. im also looking into the idea of getting a 350 block with rotating assembly, heads, and valve train. id tear it down and spec everything and rebuild if nessacary. will the manifold from my 305 work, or should i get a set of headers instead? right now, im looking at just getting a cheap run around, and all of my money would go for that.

Just buy the 350. Remember my first engine debacle? Spun a bng after 100miles. It sounded AWFUL. I gave the engine to a buddy of mine, he tore it down and the crank was so bad that it needs to be replaced. Good luck.
