Popping a code on the highway

Popping a code on the highway
I just noticed this recently on my RS V8 305 5.0L TBI.
I'm driving down the highway for about 15 minutes and my check engine light comes on. I get home, turn my car off, and next time I turn it on, its not there. I'm driving down the highway again, and it same thing happens. And everytime it happens, if I shut off my car, the engine light goes out and doesn't come back on until i've been on the highway for a while.
Any ideas on what it could be? I can't get it to somewhere to have the code read because it doesn't come back one when i start my car.

RE: Popping a code on the highway
its almost impossible to tell without knowing the code. could be any number of things, but the code will be logged into the computer, so take it to a shop anyways and they can tell you what code its throwing, or just pull the check engine light bulb out haha

That is how the light works. There will be a code in meory. Use a papper clip on the ALDL connector on the right side of the column. Jump the a+b pins and turn the key on, engine off and count the flashes. It will flsh code 12 (one flash, pause, two flashes) 3 times and every code stored after that in the same way

RE: Popping a code on the highway
Well jdubs, that,s exactly what my 91rs 305 tbi is doing, check engine light only comes on after being on the freeway for (like you said) 15 to 20 minutes, my brother is an ASE tech! and we have scanned the computer" and no codes, nor even hard codes, have replaced O2 sensor, tps sensor, egr valve and sensor, to clear those codes that it was showing, and never saw the light for a week or so, and only on the freeway. The car runs perfect! about all he could suggest to me was to scan the computer, while on a dyno! he thinks that it could be the "mat sensor" or manifold air temp? the one i believe he is referring too is the one in the bottom of the air cleaner? that has a two prong plug going to it, and mine is alittle loose keeps falling out of the housing, probably the culprit.Hope you find it! cause it bugs me too! good luck.

If you have access to an actual scanner and not a code reader then drive it on the highway while a passenger watches the scanner.

Oh im sure he could figure it out! and he does have a scanner, but since he switched to Diesel trucks about 7 years ago, dont see him much, found temp solution thats works well for now, a piece of electrical tape.
