Parking brake adjustment question/clarification
Hi guys:
I recently replaced my drum brakes with a used (but in excellent shape) disc brake, posi rear with 370's. The rear pulls much better but with my little 305ci I don't feel the difference I want (350 engine going in during the summer). I was wondering if I'm adjusting the parking brake properly. Is the cable that connects the brake handle to the cables from calipers the point of adjustment? I've been tightening it for a while and it still not holding the way I would like it to be. I have adjusted the bolts on the back of the calipers and the weights to where I believe they should be. Any insite will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ya the adjustment is on the equalizer bar just where the cable goes through the floor. mine is almost to the max for adjustment as it wears out ive had to tighten it up to get more lever travel on the calipers I assume youve bought all new cables for the disc setup and youre not using the drum brake cables? i dont even know if they would work anyways

Thanks for the response. Nope it's a whole new set up. Actually Ihad the calipers rebuilt so they were as good as new when I installed them. The cables are also new. I'm only about half way down the bolt on the adjuster and I feel them starting to grab. I just wasn't sure I was doing it right. Guess I got some more tightening to go [:'(]. Thanks again

It depends on what set up you have. Early ones hat the piston that would come out as the e-brake was used. You would have to rotate the piston back into place whne changing the pads. That set up rather sucked.

Thanks Mike. I think all I did was compress the piston when I installed them but I'll check again. If it is the other system what would my plan of attack be to set the parking brake?

Sorry it has been so long in getting back to you.
If you just pushed the piston back then chances are you do not have the "poor" system. The calipers just move kinda like front calipers do? If you had the funky set up (like what was on my 84) you would see a lever with kind of a weight on it that moves on a bolt on the back directly behind the piston. There was a way of self adjusting that I tried a few times but was just a pain in the ***! If you caliper moves on the mounting bolts just have new pads in them and adjust the hand brake at the point where both cables hook. Should only have to do it once
