Unhappy newbie with a fuel tank pressure valve issue

Is there a Camaro doctor in the house? I found a device, right in front of the gas tank, white plastic. Seems to be a check valve. I removed it and blew into the inlet side and it will pop off. If I suck on it it bleeds air back. So is this to regulate tank pressure? If so how much pressure should it take to pop off? All this cause the system is failing smog FUNCTIONAL CHECK. It passes emmissions test. It won't hols pressure is what I am told. Shop wants $162.00 to smoke test diagnosis. Any suggestions? This is a 92 RS 305 TBI 5 speed.

Its the EVAP system thats failing. Yes I do live in California. Shop says I have a gross leak in the system. I have not driven the car 2K mi. since it passed its last smog test 2 years ago. Same shop doing the testing. After all these years a track record should give an indication where first to look, yes? I appreciate your reply, if you can help that is awesome! Like your picture, when I can I get my son here Ill post my picture too.

i believe you got the name right, and its not an expensive part. replace that and check the vacuum lines. they run up the driver side and the evap canister is in the front of the driver's side of the engine bay. i think the evap line on the frame is steel, so check what you can find first. being this old, its more or less going to be the rubber or plastic lines in the front on the canister

Cool

Thanks for the advice. Thats what I have kinda sorta been doing this last week. Have not found anything significant. Replaced a couple rotten hoses but can't say I am convinced I have found what I need to find. Its going back to another shop that is a Pass or don,t Pay. I hear they are good at giving advice. On thing I did that I could kick myself for is, I did not realize I had less than an 8th of a tank of gas when I took it in for smog check. Do you suppose? Thanks again.

fill it up next time and see what happens. worst case is the tank had a few rust holes, but you would notice a fuel leak. could be the vent fitting or the seal on the top of the tank

yea, I intend to do exactly that. I just made an appoitment for saturday to try again at a different shop. (Pass or Don't Pay) I have a couple more things to do before then. ( advice from a retired mechanic friend) I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again for the advice. This is a car I want to get started on and this is slowing me down. Try and get my car picture on soon. Thanks

It Passed! Took it in for another smog check. This time with a filled tank. Mechanic said that the new cap I purchased at Autozone was wrong style. He put a new cap on and it passed!
On to bigger and better projects. New suspension comes next that may include lowering. Have not decided yet.
Thanks for the input.
