New alternator and battery didn't help battery I s still dying altenator is not charging the battery.my dash shows 10.5 volts any ideas??

 

Put multimeter on battery with engine running. Report with results.

Put multimeter on output wire on alternator. Report with results.

Check cable from battery to alternator. Make sure alternator is making good ground and all connections are tight. Make sure exciter wire is making contact and isn't crushed.

 

There is not a wire from batt to alt there's fusible links and they all go on a splitter and proceed from there

 

When I test the battery it has 10.5 volts running just like my dash says I traced all wires they seem to be fine

 

The wire on main stud on the back of the alternator should go directly to the battery. No where else. Without this, then the car won't see any thing but battery voltage.

 

The red wire on the plug is the exciter, check voltage there, both engine running and off. The heavier red wire to the right (mounted to back of alternator) is the output wire to the battery, check voltage there both engine running and off.

 

Also when checking voltage on BATT stud, feel alt case.
If hot, there may be a heavy short in electrical system.
If not hot, remove red wire and measure stud.
If no increase, bad alt - regulator inside or bad diode or brushes worn out.

 

I put 2 new altenators on got them both tested there not getting hot.the plug has 2 wires and the heavy gauge red wire.they all go to a stud that's not grounded it just has other wires that branch off and if I ran the heavy wire to the batt off the alt do I need a fusible link???

 

No fusible link. Run the big thick red wire straight to the battery. It may be set up to go a jumper post now, but try running it straight to the battery. If you then get proper voltage readings there is an issue with the wiring at that jumper post.

If you have a two wire plug, if I remember right, one (the thicker of the two and red) should go to the stud of the alternator and the other, usually white, goes to idiot light or gauge.

Post a pic of the set up now if you can. Just to help clarify things.

 

I put the big red wire behind the alternator that's on the stud to the battery still isn't helping so do I run the smaller red wire to the stud and from the stud to the battery.i have a 2 wire plug black and red.and another red wire on the stud
