Default mustang problem

Well the camaros been running great, u might notice i havent posted much in a while. well ive always known of my buddy terry's mustang, but its never been a concern. just a mostly stock early 80's ls stang with a 302 swap. as for the 302, it was bored 40 over, edelbrock performer cam and a stock low rise dual plane manifold, and holley 750 carb. well it was a tire burner but hey its light... obviously u can see by now that the parts are not very well matched up.

well its been down all winter. he comes back, hes got an air suspension that fills one side when launching for straighter launches, and brand new posi rear end, not sure of the ratio, but high, a brand new racing 3 speed tranny, and a new performer manifold, already had the cam. along with t his he got a true dual 3 inch exhaust installed and new headers. i like the kid but its competition now.

well i guess ill list my advantages over him, and his over mine.

mine:
-more cubic inches
-wider, grippier tires
-bigger cam with single plane rather then dual
-my 700r4 tranny's first gear, most of you probably know
-x-pipe and smaller exhaust tubes (2 1/2 inch) helping the bottom end
-long tube headers rather then shorties

his:
-about 400-500 lbs lighter
-posi rear end
-more bottom end
-a lot higher ratio rear end
-maybe the tranny im unfamilier with this type, dont kno much about it

thats what i can think of at teh moment. we are eventually going to race in a safe spot, but i would jsut like some opinions on how i stand at the moment. i plan on having new heads and a new rear end before i race him, but how do u think i stand as is?

It's kinda hard to say, no offense to you but my bet is on the stang. them lil 302's do good in that light of a car, hes got a offley big carb on that motor though, but it would help to know what components do you got in that 350.

it looks like you might be able to take him with your upgrades its just the weight of his car plus the gears hes pulling, but mustangs are usually a problem

yea they are like hemroids. they hurt for a short time but you get htem in the end.

as for my motor, its a 350 bored .030. comp cams 280H cam, .100 longer then stock magnum pushrods, 1.52 roller tip rockers, bigger valve springs, weiand x-celerator single plane manifold, ****ty edelbrock marine 600 carb, forged crank, forged rods, flat top pistons. 70cc combustion chambers making about a 9.5:1 compression. 700r4 tranny, stock 2.73 rear end. long tube 1 5/8 headers, true dual 2.5 inch exhaust with x pipe and moroso spiral flow mufflers. and to wrap it up it sticks pretty good with 295 50/15 radial t/a's in the back. as for the power band, it starts at about 3 grand, is at its peak at 4500, and slows back down at 6500, but i keep it away from there.

TIMMY WHY YOU RUNNIN SUCH A SMALL CARB? WHY DONT YOU GO UP TO A DOUBLE PUMPER HOLLEY 750? I KNOW IT SUCKS DOWN A LOT OF GAS. BUT WITH A MOTOR THATS MAKES POWER AT HIGH RPMS DONT YOU THINK IT WOULD BE BETTER?

That small carb and 2.73 gears are killing your performance. Get something like 3.70 gears and 750 CFM carb as 366CAMARORS mentioned, then you can really spank that pesky Mustang.

oh yea jsut happened today, i bought a 750cfm holley of my friend for 40 bucks, and about 5 minutes ago i ordered a rebuild kit for it off of jegs. so you can add a 750 holley to that list. i jsut had that carb laying around thats why its on it. finally i can lose that vapor locking restrictive low performing edelbrock carb out of my life for good. i used to lvoe edelbrocks till i went through two in a year. one of them the accelerator pump was shot and it kept getting stuck at wot and the second one cant fit enough air into the motor so it jsut dumps a bunch of gas and loads up at lower rpms when i try to rev.

another consideration timmy is them 70cc combustion chambers. not sure on a 302 but my 305 has 58cc combustion chambers. as you know the smaller the combustion chamber the higher the compression. the higher the compression the more horsepower. alot of restricted racers run 305 heads on a 350 to get extra horsepower. if you was to have your heads angle milled you could get them combustion chambers down to 60cc or less. which would up your horsepower quite a bit. ofcourse you would have to port your intake runners and use two intake gaskets per side and possible hone some valve relief into your pistons. i just bought a set of milled and ported 305HO heads which is gonna up my compression to 11:1 possible a bit more. can hardly wait to see how much it ups my horsepower. Sick

i do want to keep my compression below 11:1. 10:5:1 maximum. over the winter im tiling and doing some work like that, and i should make enough in a couple jobs to get new heads, but would it be cheaper to jsut do up what i have? just to let you know, these heads are about the worst that ever came out. very small intake and exhaust valve, adn very small intake runners. i have flat top pistons in there right now. by the way your car has come a long time since i was last on this site. times a lot shorter too, i admire how your getting that time out of a 305.
