mega shifters

a friend of mine had one is his trans am. he said he like it, but i didnt like it. it was difficult to get out of park and to go from neutral to reverse. its designed so people who cant shift an auto dont accidently drop it into reverse at speed (previous owner of my car did that). however, that shifter also is the reason he crashed his car. he had it in first gear to do a little burnout, and the throttle stuck. being his car was a 350 it overpowered the brakes and he couldnt get into neutral before he launched the car over a curb. totaled the car because it couldnt get to neutral fast enough. keep that in mind

I have one. For a DD It's really not ideal. As Micro said it's difficult to get out of park and select a gear. It would be much better if it was a little smoother and if the T bar could override the ratcheting mechanism.
Overall though, I like mine, but I have a built transmission so I'm able to get more use out of mine.

Hurst used to make the dual gate shifter console model for the third gen.
I would go that way if there was a choice, unfortunately it's been discontinued.
In standard mode, it acts like a straight-line shifter. Slide the shifter over to the right gate, and it's a ratchet.
The old 60's-70's GTO had that as an option nicknamed the "His & Hurst" shifter.
Here's the 2nd gen Camaro version: Hurst Dual Gate
