mine did that too...you have to break the lock and theres a little plastic piece that you can turn with a screwdriver to open. You'll need a new lock too

Does your have the power pull down? Possibly the cable is a little stretched. Try puutting some downward pressure on the hatch as you turn the key. Try that even if its not power. Both my dad's 83 and 85 did not have power and we found it was easy to push down and open it.
Also you may be able to adjust the latch up a little but make sure it does not rattle and still seals

i dont think its power but it might be. theres a weird switch inbetween the window switches and it has a slot in it. i can put a screwdriver in it and move the switch back and forth, but it doesnt do anything.

The center switch should be a remote release but may not be a power pull down. Its a slide switch so if the button was missing here would be a slot there. My 84 originaly had the remote release without a pull down.

Yes it will open with the key. What it would have on the back of the lock isa plastic retainer that holds a cable that goes to the release mech on the latch. But some times the latch has a lot of pressure on it and it helps to push down on the hatch while turning the key. Had to do it that way every time I opened my dads no motorized for fear of twisting the key because it was very tight. Its just habit now because when I use the key to open my motorized one I push down any way.

That is correct. Also,I would suggest that you take the back panel off and find out how messed up the pull down is from the previous owner.
