it was coming out right above the tire not out the wheel so i opened the hatch cuz i was wondering if something electrical inside the car was causing it but none came out their. i started it back up after the smoke and pumped the brakes to see if it was leaking and it didnt smoke anymore

Do you use your e-brake on a regular basis? If it's rarely, or never used, the cable can get rusty inside the housing and might not release on it's own. Jack up that wheel, pull the e-brake up and release it, then see if the wheel spins freely.

Did you also check to see if you had any roadkill wedged up in the wheelwell? How do you like your meat...well-done?
It didn't happen to smell like a BBQ back there, did it? lmao

Lemme state the obvious here.....are you sure you weren't seeing.......exhaust? These are old cars with less than super tight engines. A little smoke from time to time is to be expected.

I like where everyone is going with the parking brake, Id start with that, but dont discount what you saw as being simply normal.

My new engine has less than 2500 on it but the valve seals werent fresh when the engne was reassembled. (Long story) Mine will puff from time to time.

Did you check to see if something got stuck under your exhaust pipes? I sucked up a plastic bag years ago. It hit my exhaust and stuck there. Nice plume of smoke and scared the hell out of me until I climbed under the car and found what was left of the bag......
