limiting the speed on a camaro?
Hey Guys and gals, I have been looking at iroc and camaros with my 16 year old and was wondering if there is a chip set or programmable chip that you can get to limit the top speed of the car? My best friend had a 86 IROC and I just remember all the stupid crap we did in it, and like any father, I don't want my son ending upsidedown in a corn field. Any suggestions???? Thanks Matt
Yes,you can have a speed limiter. GM had one on 3rd gen cars with non-speed rated tires to 110 mph. So if you can find someone to burn tou a new Prom (chip) for the ECM it will work. But I don't think any speed limiter is going to make anyone a safer driver, you can have a bad one a lower sppeds too. Driving skill is the key and not a speed limiter. my opinion....
How about you NOT give a 16 year old a sports car? Just saying. Im sorry, but between this site and my corvette forum, Im seeing a bumper crop of parents wanting to buy sports cars for their kids. First off, a 25 year old car is going to require constant upkeep. Secondly, these are sports cars, its inherent to their nature to be driven, like, well, a sports car. Are you going to hand a 16 year old the keys and say 'behave yourself, especially on a Saturday night when some ricer tries to race you'. I know it can happen with ANY car, but owning a hot looking car at 16 is just inviting them to play around with it. Just my .02.

If you are looking at Irocs then the vehicle will be 25 plus years of age
Are you good at welding in patches from the rust unless of course it's a southern or Cali car?
Are yoiu capable of replacing all the hydraulic and fuel lines because they probably need replacing? Do you want a vehicle which sputters or might leave him stranded?
Who cares if junior thinks it would be cool to have a Camaro. First and foremost, our babies must be safe.
Now, with respect to racing or messing around, that's going to happen whether you get him a pickup or a Mustang/Camaro. You need to know your boy
I purchased, and made ready a 95 Z28 for my junior. But, junior was under the car with me every step of the way and does not want to ruin the car. I've seen his friends who were handed a vehicle have it ruined within weeks. Junior loves the Z and wants it to last. Mamma and I were in disagreement and fortunately I was right. By giving him a car that he appreciates he takes care of it. Yes, he's been to the drag strip with it which is where it should be run.
So, be it a Maro or a Kia, it's not the car which will determine how your boy behaves.
