Default Leaking Gasoline

1990 Camaro RS 305 TBI

I have a leaking problem with my gas tank. Every time the tank is full and i take a right turn at 10 mphs + i leak gas out of the cap.

The cap is very hard to screw on, I also think it could be bent.. when ilook in the filler tube, the grooves look a little scraped up, like the cap gets caught on it, maybe i just need to try and squeeze the tube and get it back to roun instead of oval.

I've replaced the cap 3 times.

Any other ideas? maybe i should sand the grooves,

Sounds like you're saying the filler tube up top is out of round, oval shape? If that's the case, then your cap likely is getting stuck and not going on all the way and sealing. Fix the filler tube so the cap goes on like it should. What got it out of round?

I have no clue to be honest, i know someone replaced the fuel pump for me once and removed the tank and cleaned it out... not sure as to why it leaks, i believe it leaked even beofre that incident.

Don't make right turns
If right turns are made, go less than 10 mph.

Seriously, yes, check filler tube for flatness
Might even smear some petroleum jelly onto the rubber seal of the cap and see if this lessens leakage.

Ya i'm going to check that today.
as far as petroleum jelly goes, do you recommend a specific brand and does it just say petroleum jelly? i've never used petroleum jelly for anything before.

hahaha,

Well first i tried to tighten the neck up, no dice.

Then I tried the vasoline to see if it would screw in further, again no dice.

So then I got an idea!!!
I noticed the gas cap has a rubber gasket on it.
So i bought another gas cap... took the gasket off of it, put it on the one i was already using.. so now my current gas cap has two gaskets.. AND NO GAS LEAK!!
Now i can finally find out what kind of mileage i'm getting!

Well, I thought i fixed the problem by putting the second gasket on there... However... i can still smell gas... zzzzz

I thought i fixed it because I no longer see gas leaking on my rear quarter panel.

But when i go and feel under my gas cap... it's wet with gasoline...

I've tried to bend the filler neck with big pliers, but nothing seems to fix this...

Dare I try 3 gas cap gaskets??? ><
