first of all, i'm back. it's been quite a while since i've been on the site. but i need some help. something is wrong with my car. when you first start it, it no longer idles at 1500 for a minute or two and then idles down. (it's a tbi) instead it idles at about 750 almost immediately. then it starts idling funky. it will go way down almost to the point of stalling. it then is fine until you put it into drive or reserve for the first time. it does the same thing until you are moving. then it's fine. my dad has tried putting in difference intake air temperature switches, mass air flows, and throttle position sensors. do you have any idea what this might be? thanks

check your vaccume lines

 

May want to look at the IAC valve (Idle Air Control), that is what controls idle speed.

 

I would start with basics. Have you inspected the plugs? wires? What kind of condition are they in?

 

my bet is it is your o2 sensor when you figure it out let us know

 

my dad tried a iac from a junkyard. that did nothing, although there is a chance that it may have been junk but we doubt it. i'm pretty sure it's not plugs or wires but it is possible. my dad was thinking it may be the O2 sensor as you said. the thing is, no check engine light comes on so we can't tell what it is.

 

My brother inlaws 98 truck o2 sensor's went bad and it never gave a code you think it would sometimes you never know it depends on how bad or plugged up it is,you have more air flow when you are driving so it is reading, but when it is sitting you are not getting enough airgoing throughit to read right, if you have checkevery thing else i would pull it and see what it looks like if it looks bad i would change it out with a new one, also like 350rs said check your vac. hoses if they are cracked replace them as well that is pretty cheap. as far as the plugs and wires i think what gvmv was trying to say is you can tell a lot about what the engine is doing by the way the plugs look and if you have wire starting to break down. check the plugs against a plug chart just to see what the engine is doing.

 

i'm definately gonna check out the o2 sensor. would a bad gasket somewhere on the throttle body do this?

 

I could create a vaccum leak but i don't know enough about the TBI system to give you a clear answer on that
