Default I just bought my 1991 Camaro RS, & I need help knowing what I'm dealing with?

My Camaro is a 1991 RS but has a completly different engine in it. It has a 350 but the guy I bought it off modified it & said that he upraged it to a 400. So I'm not sure what I really have under the hood but this is all he told me 400 .030 over block with 350 crank rods, timing gears, roller cam, 194 heads. Not really sure what that means, help?

Another Franken car. Who knows what lurks unde the hood. As I see this Post, it is your mistake for buying something unknown and then hope someone else can guess what it is..

What are you worried about? Just drive the "best" oh I mean BEAST!!!! Lol j/k give some more info, like is it inspected? Do you need to have emission test done? How does it drive? Any leaks, overheating, ect....

Yeah I missed a letter there haha. But yeah it was overheating apperantly the radiator had a leak so i just ordered a new radiator all aluminum that's what it had already & just waiting on that so the timing can get checked but besides that it drives really smooth, it shifts just fine & it runs like a champ. I just have problems looking for parts like air filter etc, since i dont really know whats the engine & what I'm looking for.

If those specs are correct, you have a 377.

Big bore and (relatively) short stroke....should make a ton of power at higher RPM's.

Certainly way better than a limp 305....

Thank you! That gets me somewhere! Haha & the thing about the RPM, the gauge doesn't work well the previous owner had it like that he told me something about the ignition box he put it didn't allow the gauge to work so it just goes all the way & it doesn't move. The box he put on there says something like HI-IGNITION 6 something like that. Any tips?

Either you have a 350, or you have a 400. You can't have both as they are two different style engine blocks. Your car never came with a 350 available, 305 was the only V8.
.030 over means the cylinders were bored out by that much and oversized pistons were put in.
350 connecting rods are 5.7" long (common size), 400 rods are 5.565" long. If he used 350 rods in the 400, then the connecting rod position on the new pistons would be placed closer to the top (to keep it a 400). But theres the question, did he use a 350 crank, or 350 rods? You're blending the terms.
Roller cam is one that uses roller lifters (a roller on the bottom) as opposed to flat tappet (no roller) lifters.
1.94 heads have intake valves that are 1.94" in diameter. That alone means nothing, as even many non hi-performance heads have 1.94 valves.
Look all over at the following site to find numbers on your block and heads to determine what you have. If it's a 400, you have a good engine, provided it was built right. Camaro Decoding help on Chevy-Camaro.com

Wow you really know about cars don't you? Well thank you very much it does really help I really want to know what all of this means. & well that's how the guy put it, those are in his own words so idk what he meant by crank rods then, he probably just felt to lazy to email me the exact things. But yeah he did mention that he swapped the engine & rebuilt it himself. & thats's what he told me that it's a 350 but did some modification that made it a 400 idk it sounds all confusing to me & well I been trying to find an air filter for that thing but the one they pulled out for the 350 was not it, so yeah it's confusing..

I see you live in Tucson as well....

Do you know if that car was registered for 2011. I'm asking because our emission laws are about as tight as california. If it was a swapped motor, it will still have to put out the same emission levels as whatever the stocker put out in the levels accepted for 1991. Post a pic of the engine, if you have an open element filter, just find one someplace like Don's hot rod, they are priced the same as the chains, and those guys know cars. It sounds to me like a bit of a basket case, even if it does run well. The only way to know what you have is to find the casting as the back of the block by the dist. It will have the call out (LG 5.0, or L98 5.7) then we can figure out what you have.

As for the tach not working, it wasn't properly wired. Negative from ignition goes to the tach. It involves cutting and splicing the negative lead to the tach. After my swap, all of my gauges work, there is no reason yours shouldn't as well. BTW, negative is the white wire, pink is positive.
