Hello,

First post here, hoping you can help.

I'm posting on behalf of my neighbour, who owns an '86 Camaro 2.8 V6. He is mechanically minded, and has spent the last year doing the car up, with a full respray, service and other bits.

The car is now ready for the road, and starts first time, and will run for many miles with no problem.....until you switch off, and then try to restart! [:@] The engine turns over on the starter, but won't fire or even cough. The only thing that gets it to restart is waiting around 5 or 10 minutes, at which point it starts again with no problem.

I'm guessing their could be any number of small problems that could cause this, but which one? Vacuum leak when the pipes are expanding? Fuel vaporising with the heat? Electrical problem?

Lastly, are there any members or specialists on this forum from England?

ive got a 92 v8 camaro and i have the same problem dont no what it is though

 

it's one of three things ... ignition coil, ignition module or the pickup coil. ignition coil can be checked with a voltage meter, autozone will check the ignition module for free, as for the pickup coil i don't know of any accurate way to test it. i would have the other two checked and if no luck change out the pickup coil. it's cheap, just a pain in the **** to change. if under inspection you notice the outer tape that covers the coil is burned any thats probably your problem. just a guess i'm leaning toward the ignition coil but you never know. good luck. I would have to agree with Sick there, but for one minor detail. Third Gen Camaros have a reputation, at least around here, of having bad ignition modules. I've had two of them, both had the same problem, and both were fixed once the module was replaced. Not to discredit Sick, as he clearly knows more than I about the cars in general, but seeing as how it's happened to me twice on two seperate cars, I would get that checked first, but still check everything in the system. As for people in England, I couldn't tell you, but I'd be happy to help, If you'd provide airfare and a room.

 

ok there is also one other problem that i have come across with that but it is mostly in race cars and on my fathers 69 chevelle and it was that the starter was just too hot. so you can always check that but to get the starter neede its a lot of money.

my car used to have the hot start problem when i changed from manifolds to headers. car was an 83 z28305. swapped starters to a proform mini starter and never had any problems since
