hey guys need some info
Hey guys I'm new in the forum hello to everyone, let's get to the point I got a 88 rs 2.8 5 speed as a gift from my uncle the car was sittin for about 6 - 7 months I change the spark plugs clean out the gas tank the lines it gave me a lil problem to start but she stared ad has been runnig perfect so far it has a CEL I still have to check what it is. I was wondering if you guys can tell me what engine and transmission I can fit in it with not that modification to the mounts and all of that, I can modified but not to the extreme I was thinkin of a ls1 or a lq9 I kinda know that they similar to each other, maybe if I could use the same transmission or what can it be done. Again thanks a lot guys and ill be posting pics of the car soon. Thank you
an ls swap is more difficult to do that a traditional small block conversion. swapping to a 350 isnt hard, just need engine mounts, trans, and supporting items depending on what sort of fueling you plan to go with. an ls swap is at least 3 times more expensive, will require a lot more work and parts, but will start off with more power
You will need new mounts specific for an ls swap, and you'll likely need to fabricate a crossmember for the t56. Also, you'll need to figure out how to hook up your torque arm, that cannot be left disconnected, also, most likely you'll need the driveshaft length shortened. The ls swap is very expensive, this is also assuming you aren't getting a worked over junkyard motor. Also, you'll need to check emission laws before you even begin to see if this is possible.
pa emissions laws will allow it. its a newer motor, and as long as all the emissions equipment is brought over with the ls and is "functional" it will be legal. take a look through here. LSx LS1 Engine Motor Swap Parts | 1982-1992 F-Body Camaro & Firebird they sell everything needed. getting gauges might be the most expensive part unless you graft in an ls gauge cluster
Again, I don't know where you are located, but here in arizona, if you pursue that swap, all emissions equipment must be transferred as well, this means cats, AIR injection, etc. etc. If that is not a requirement...then any old SBC will work, but keep in mind your V6 trans will not work with a v8, so you will still incurr a large cost. It is always best to start with a V8 car when possible so all the parts will most likely interchange. Wiring for your FI will also be a difficult task beside the actual install and set up of the motor/trans combo.
