Well it sounds like he left it off because there may be a leak in it. Also there may be a valve on it to shut off the flow of hot coolant that is missing. I know there is a valve on my 91 but can not remember if it was there on my 84.

Oh and you also should check the cable between the switch and blend air door. There is a red tab on the end that holds it in place and some times it pops out or breaks off.

I second that ^
If you smell antifreeze from inside the car, it's a leak. Do you live in a climate where you need to use the heat? If not, I would just leave it bypassed.

yup if you smell antifreeze in the passenger compartment check around the passenger floorboard for wet spots it maybe leaking in from the core.
it should be over there but ive never changed the heater core on a camaro. only s10s. but id be prepared to drop the dash.

as for it staying on check the door that madmikez28 was talking about.
my old s10 wouldnt stop blowing hot air and there was a screw wedged in that door holding it open.

S10's were blessed with a fairly easy heater core change. Camaro's were not. Don't make it harder on yourself and just remove the whole dash to do it.

Nodata hours are based on info from the factory for a shop labor time. It should not take you as long to do the job. That is though waht a shop would usaly charge. But in those hours are a bunch of other factores other than hour long it will take.

There are vacuum operated doors as well. The temp lever at the bottom of the selector is a cable and it moves a door by the heater core. Between the heater core and a/c if applicable. The vacuum is for operating the other doors that direct the air to the selected vents.
