headers for third gen
 

my wife and I own a 89 IROC Z28 and a 91 RS both have 305's.
I have alot of trouble changing the spark plugs in both cars due to athritis (spelling?) in both hands. is there a set of headers that makes it easer to get at the plugs on these cars?

those are shorty headers for my 89 RS with 305

I can't image they'll be any worse than what my stock 4th gen LT1 was (now has Pacesetters)

I won't be any help with respect to installation because my engine and tranny are out so the headers and plugs will probably go on before I hoist it back into the car

No, if anything Headers might make it harder to change the plugs. The #8 plug is about impossible to change even for someone with small and nimble hands and that is not I.

it used to take me about 45 minutes to do all 8 plugs on my 305. with the 383 and small diameter headers, it takes about 15 minutes. you dont need a header socket, but i would advise it because then you can just use a wrench on the spark plug socket. i can use an open end 5/8 as well. just chose the correct one. i had a lot of issues with the headman header/y-pipe combo. it fit poorly, rubs the frame, the y-pipe didnt meet with the headers, and the y-pipe is smaller than factory

hay microkid do you remember the make and mod. of the headers on your 383? I just figured to go with duels all the way back and maybe a set of flow master 40's for muffs. any thoughts on this combo?

Forget about a Dual Exhaust, have you really looked at the underside of 3rd gen car???
Tou will be better off performance wise with 3" mandrel bend pipes and a single muffler. Also good luck changing plugs with headers.

My system is SLP 1 3/4 headers, SLP slipfit pipe to Catco cat and SLP 3" catback. All stainless steel.

Ditto on the duals. They dont fit right. The are stacked on top of each other and scrape on everything. My summer project will be to ditch my duals and run a 3" setup.

i dont have the part number, but they were direct fit shorties from hedman and the y-pipe that was supposed to work with them. needless to say, it was not direct fit and i needed to add 3 inches to the collectors on the y-pipe for it to fit. but as far as changing plugs, its a breeze. i dont even have a header socket, i have a standard length socket with a 3/4" drive on the end. there are also header spark plugs which are shorter.

it only takes me about 15 minutes to change all 8 plugs on my RS, do the back 4(2 on either side) from under the car, and the front 4 from the top, I usually do the 2 front plugs from the top and the rest from the bottom because i like that better, makes the job cake, I have stock manifolds at the moment, but yes Headers will make the job a little harder depending on what brand you go with, they make "spark plug header sockets" to make the job easier but ive never tried them.
