I have a 1989 Iroc-Z with a TBI 305. For some reason it likes to grind in first gear when taking off. I was wondering if this was just the alignment or if Im going to need a new clutch? I tried taking off in second gear, it did the same thing. Any suggestions?

Where is the grinding sound coming from. Out in front or under you?

My guess is manual, since he asked if he needs a new Clutch!
My89Iroc, you need to be a little more descriptive. Usually grinding the gears (if you can't find 'em, grind 'em) happens while putting it in gear, or shifting between gears. Could it be a whine, or a chatter sound? Or, do you hear/feel it when you push in the clutch pedal, which could mean a bad throwout bearing. More info is needed.

 

It sounds like its grinding from below. Its wierd because it grinds while engaging in first. Not while I shift to first or anything like that. Its when Irelease the clutch pedal to begin moving forward. Its not a wine, more like a chatter that I can best explain as an Rrrr sound.My freind thinks itmight be a pressure plate, maybe the guy before me did too many burnouts in first gear.

 

My Ducati with a dry multi disc would do that when I first got it until I got used to it. I had to find the happy medium between how fast i released the clutch to how much throttle I gave it. Either the motorcycle would shake or the clutch would squeal.
Have you driven a manual before? Oh and do it right? If not has some one with more expirience driven the car to see if it happens to them?

 

OK, that helps some. I've experienced that before, and changing the oil in the trans took care of it. The old oil was allowing the gears to "free wheel" too much after the clutch was pushed in, and I would get a "crunch" while trying to put it in first. Going with a little thicker viscosity oil canhelp even more to slow down the innards of the trans when the clutch is disengaged, especially if your trans has a bit of wear and is sloppy.

 

I would not use thick oil in it. The T5's use ATF in them believe it or not. And ATF is not thick.

 

Oops, didnt read it well obviously. I don't have really any experience with T-5's, but alot of times in a manual transmission if there is a grinding noise taking off, it could be the throw out bearing. Does the clutch feel like it is slipping at all?

 

No, it doesnt slip at all. Everything is all good except for the grind. It doesn't happen all the time either.
