Dumb question about 12 bolt GM rear ends and 3rd gen camaros
I tried searching the forums but couldn't come up with the info I was looking for. I have an '82 Z28 that has a 350 bored .30 over and a 6-71 Weiand blower. I bought the car as it sits now. The guy I bought it from put all the money into the engine and tranny (turbo 400) but not a dime into the chassis or rear end. I plan on an 8 point bar and SFC's this winter. I also was looking at good rear ends for it, and was wondering if a 12 bolt GM would be strong enough? The engine is putting out around 600 hp. If a stock 12 bolt would be strong enough...here's the dumb question - how do I know which one would be compatible with my generation Camaro? The ones I see on ebay all came from early 70's Novas, El Caminos etc. Are these all a standard width? I don't know much about rear ends, so any info would be helpful!

Honestly, I'd just go with a Ford 9 inch, if you can afford to spend about $2000, it's probably the best thing you could get for the car, and there are kits available that will bolt right in, and since it's got a third member, changing gear ratios is alot easier than with a standard rear, which is especially usefull if you want to drag race it, but don't want to use the low gears all the time. Plus, there's probably a wider selection of gears for that rear than most any other I've seen. Summit Racing sells up to 7.33:1.

That's the rear and axles.

That's a complete third member assembly with 4.11 gears, already installed. Little higher than I thought originally, but still not a bad deal. You can get nodular iron gears in one of those for about $300 more.

GM 12 bolt and a Ford 9" rear end are both comprable choices. Even a 10 bolt will hold that power.

Personally, I'd go with the Ford, just for the fact that it uses a third member, and is much easier to service, since most of the work on the gears can be done on a bench, and those who want to drag occaisionally and drive every day can buy a second third member and keep two different gear ratios set up at all times, with a (relatively) small amount of work for the swap.

For the track, as long as you can get traction with 4.11's lol.
