Default changing rear end gears, what to expect??

I currently have a set of pathetic 2.77 gears in my Maro. (close guess when I spun and counted) Ive found a junkyard with a nice complete rear end out of a 87 (mines an 82) , 3.73 posi. It should be a simple swap.

What should I expect going from a 2.77 to a 3.73? SOme of my friends tell me its going to be a HUGE difference in takeoff, which is the answer Im looking for. Input?

Funny note: These ouchebags wanted 700 dollars for the entire assembly, but I talked em down to 400! Go ME!

I like my 2.77. It gets me great MPGs'.
So expect the mileage to go down and the speedo to be off. I think Z28 Pete just posted a sticky on gears. I am not sure though. And I don't think the take off will be all that great as you might expect. I changed from 3.43 to 2.77 and had run at the drags with both and it was not all that different and on my desk top drag strip its not that big a difference.

well i dont know about a rocketship, its not a honda afterall, however you will noticea difference in acceleration with a higher gear ration in the back. dont expect it to be ridiculous though

I just really want some more 'off the line' punch. Not much more I can do to the engine, (within reason) so this is my other option.

Plus, I WANNA SPIN MY TIRES! Its tough with that 2.77......

off the time is going to be the only real difference your going to notice, about the first 15mph your going to hit alot quicker, after that its not going to be as big of difference, and im not sure its going to be the huge difference your expecting.

and as far as swapping the rear end, its usually a pretty simple swap, unless like me some old lady let your car sit in her swampy backyard for 4 years. the u bolts holding my rear end on, were pretty well rusted on there, had to use a torch to get a few of them off. otherwise, as long as you know brakes its a very simple swap, can do it in about 3 hours if your good.

There is no U bolts! Its trailing arms. there is the bolts on the trailing arms, shocks, pan hard rod, the brace next to that, brake hose, e brake cables, sway barand the drive shaft. I swapped mine faster than it took me to type this.

I would double check that ratio on your junkyard find. One reason No 1987 model came with a 3:73 rear axle ratio and it could be a 2:73 because junkyards are not very relieable with their info. 1986 was the last year 3:73 was used and it was an option (RPO G92 for 1986) and I would think very few came that way. So unless you want it rain on your parade I would do very good check on that rear axle assembly.[sm=icon_blah.gif][sm=icon_blah.gif]

Its that 'off the line' snap Im going for. Ive got a healthy 350 in her now (well, other than the oil consumption issues but nevermind) but when I pound on her from a stop, the first 5 seconds are very unimpressive. But 350RS said it will make me a rocketship so now Im happy.....

black87- I plan on doing the 'spin and count' when I go to pick up the rearend today or tomorrow. Just to make sure Ive got it right, the yoke should turn 3.73 times for every 1 turn of the wheels, correct?
