carb related start question
Previous owners to my camaro installed a new carb. I'm not sure what brand and model exactly, but here is my major concern.
When I start her up from a cold start I pump the gas twice, then crank it. She almost always starts beautifully and idles high. This is normal. Idle stays around 2000. It then begins to climb, rather rapidly, and peaks out around 2600 2700 RPM. Once she even went up to 3k. This worried me as she would not rev down when I tapped the gas.
One day (ironically after being rearended), this occurred and she would NOT for anything rev down. It wasn't even a cold morning (i almost feel she rev'd down better in the colder months)... A bit disturbed and worried I turned the engine off (bad idea with it revving at like 2700), and I was greeted by a clanking clank noise and some blue smoke rising from under my hood. Opened her up but couldn't tell exactly where the smoke was generating from, and it left rather quickly. Gave it a minute to sit, and started her up again. After a few minutes, she rev'd down with a gentle tap.
Since that day, she seems to so far be starting alright and revving down after a few minutes. While I'm unsure of the specifics on the carb installed, I'm guessing it's using a sensor to determine when it's warm enough to rev down on a slight kick to the gas pedal.(rev's down to round 800ish).
Now, I'm not too familiar with carburated engines, but 2500-2700ish sounds a bit high to me for warming up. Asked my friend about it and his stang only hits round 2000 before it will let him kick it down. Anything to be majorly worried about (aside from the noise/smoke when i shut her off while she was revving high one morning)? I myself don't feel comfortable adjusting my carb myself, and the usual person who assists me with these matters won't be available for a month or so. So far she revs down fine after a minute or two, but I'm worried about what to do in the event she DOESNT rev down. =/
Thanks in advance.

Find out what kind of carb you have, then look it up an a repair manual or online.
Your choke needs an adjustment. There are two adjustments to make: The choke wind-up which sets how tightly the choke butterfly closes when the engine is cold, and the fast idle screw which overrides engine idle speed when the choke is closed. Sometimes you need to play with both to get the right balance of choke and idle speed. Also, depending on the carb, you probably should have an electric wire connected to the choke housing which will pull the choke off as the engine warms up.

Q jet problem hmmm...
My carbed 84 had a q jet and all I needed to do was depress the throttle once, car starts and the idle would kick down on its own as it warmed up. Did not seem like a problem to me.
Or it could be a tomco rebuilt! [:'(]

My Q jet was doing the same thing, would climb at idle..but thats just 1 out of a few. Sometimes pressing the throtle didn't work. I'm sure a good cleaning would have fixed it.
