Car stalls when Gas cap is removed

Car stalls when Gas cap is removed
I have a 1991 Camaro V8 305 and I noticed that when I remove the gas cap and try to drive it , it stalls and shuts down. I put the cap back on and it starts and has no problems. When I bought it I noticed that a couple of vacuum lines were removed so I replaced them. I also noticed that the purge valve wasn't connected to the canister so I connected it back up to the vacuum lines and the car stalled and shut down. One more thing I have to deal with if I want to drive the car is that I have a very strong fuel smell inside the car if my a/c is on and the car is warmed up. Any ideas?

Strong smell? i would not think so. The only time you should have a noticable smell is has the tank warms up. As the air in the tank warms up the fumes would be forced out where ever it can go. I would say a "strong" smell is raw gas evaporating quickly like on something hot. The word strong can vary in meaning so there is no way I can be sure.
Maybe you should take your car in to someone that knows this stuff. If my daughter call me telling me the stuff you are I would tell her to get away from the car and send a tow truck for. I would not even put in my garage in till I tracked down what was going on. Having a car burst into flames at 65 miles per hours is on my list of things I never want to happen to me.

Yeah you bet you would. You'd have some open fuel evap lines from the tank that are spewing out raw gas fumes, unless they were capped off. Why do you have that stuff disconnected? Get it hooked back up to how it should be.

Actually I didn't disconnect anything. When I bought the car I looked it over and noticed thats the way it was being driven before I bought it. I will def get it all back together as it should be asap

theres something wrong with the purge solenoid, likely its stuck open. removing the gas cap is causing a vacuum leak that the engine cant compensate for and stalls. makes sense to me
