could be, failing/arching plug wire, distributor cap has crack or moisture in it, failing rotor, failing ignition control module. distibutor could be lose and or not grounding correctly

What do you mean by "reset the distributor"? So how is it it's not running now, how did you set the timing with the engine not running? The timing gets set only when the engine is running, unless you pull it from the intake and put it back in.

thats exactly how i did it turned the crankshaft till i had compression in the 1st cylinder then turned it till the timing mark hit zero on the indicator. and by reset i mean i took it out and then did the above and then put it back in

You didn't need to remove the distributor unless the position of the vacuum advance can was restricting movement, which, depending on what distributor you have, might not even have one.
The engine was running, although not great, before you messed with the distributor and timing. So you have to figure that you messed something up. Either your timing is way off, or you may have the plug wires installed out of phase. Take a look at these two videos, and see if it doesn't give you an "aha" moment.

there's no law which says at #1 TDC the rotor needs to point to cylinder #1. Heck, it can point to the firewall if you want. The trick is just wire it correctly and make a mark for the poor soul who comes behind you and thinks #1 is at 5 o'clock

^ I think you're gonna cornfuse the poor guy with that statement.
No, the rotor doesn't need to physically point to the #1 cylinder on the engine, but it does need to line up with the #1 plug wire.
