automatic to stickshift
1990 camaro rs 305 5.0 v8
my question is how much would it cost to convert a automatic car to a stickshift manual and would it work the same or would it be a little faster because its a stick shift
Read some of my posts. I wanted to do the same thing to my 91 RS. But I have decided not to. But I forget which post but there is an answer on what all you will need in order to make a full convert to stick. If you plan on keeping the 305 and not going to a 350 later down the road ... get a Borg-Warner T6. If you plan to get a 350 down the road get a Borg-Warner T56. The T6 can not hold up to the torque of a 350.
Hope this helped.

thats the link ... the answer is this post ...
and i QUOTE " hey man, if he wants to convert his car to stick you shouldnt put it down. converting to a stock camaro 5 spd drivetrain is a lot cheaper than buying another camaro thats 5 speed, especially with how good of condition his car is in right now. if your set on stick, you will need the brake and clutch pedal assembly from amanual camaro/firebird, clutch fluid resevoir, slave cylinder, clutch, flywheel, bellhousing, trans, driveshaft, shifter, and possibly the console or at least the shift plate from a manual. its a lot of work, theres a bunch of how to articles on the net about doing it. but if you have the desire and the patience it can be done. theres a few compromises you can get which are helluva lot cheaper. you can buy a ratchet shifter which is like an old school tip tronic where you can upshift and downshift through the gears and theres no clutch, i got a B&M Megashifter. You can also get a shift kit so you get those tireblazing shifts, to swap an auto to a standard is just so expensive its just not worth it.
Ok, im about to do the swap myself.
1) I believe that you don't know a ton about cars, when I describe my engines' displacement, I use cubic inches for domestic, liters for import. And just one. So unless you know exactly what you are doing, you might not want to proceed with the swap.
2) It's Chevy, I'm picking up a rebuilt T5 next week for about 125 bucks. CHEAP!!! The clutch, bearings pressure plate and flywheel all come with it. After that, I just need the hydraulic assembly and pedals.
3) It's not a matter of money, unless you are planning on bringing it to a mechanic (In some cases, it might be a good idea). It is just a matter of experience, the ability to attain tools, and the ability to bolt and unbolt things. Pretty simple.

Everyone knows that cars are about pride, the only time you will want an automatic is for quick controllable shifts on a quarter mile track. Having some stupid aluminum shifter behind all of 165 hp is just stupid. With a manual gearbox, you get the extra gear, you get the fun of driving it, and you get amazing throttle control, should you decide to say... drift?
Point in case, it is possible. You don't have to worry about electronics very much. And it is extremely cheap. Good day chevy forums, and this btw is my first post :P
